man, that would be so nice, it's not even licensed by Viz anymore since 2014, and I think there is no one wiht a license on it right now at all, soo it'd be a great candidate

Yes please! This series is absolutely deserving of a proper English release and I think it would be very popular. I hope it will be seriously considered, as I'm dying to read the novels in English.

I'd at least give this a chance if you guys license it. I didn't love the anime, but it must count for something that I willingly watched all 3 seasons.

I'd be interested too, only watched season 1 of the anime and I'd like to know about the rest of the story.

But how many sales would it (or any other series) need to be profitable for J-novel club ?

@ManusDei said in Shakugan no Shana:

IIRC Sam said that 2000 is the break even point. So every volume would need to sell more than 2K copies to be profitable for JNC.

My light novel counter (EN & JP) for series published by Yen On / JNC / Seven Seas

Season 2 and 3 cover all volumes, just watch them and be done with it? Spoiler alert, it's very typical Japanese drama BS.

The anime covers the novels however it skipped two volumes due them not focusing on the two main characters. The novels go into greater detail and VIZ butchered the translation as well as censored artwork and certain scenes in chapters due to problematic themes, which i found as BS.

Hey, I'm pretty new here, but just wanted to say that Shana was my gateway into anime and I would really love to be able to read the source material for the series that got me into my favorite hobby of all time! I want to say that I feel that the series is nostalgic enough for a lot of older anime fans to be a successful rescue, but I have to admit there's a chance that's just my own nostalgia/hopefulness talking. I hope JNC will genuinely consider it though.

It was one of the first animes that I watched and it will be always special to me. I wanted to read the light novels but it was impossible (viz discontinued them and nobody bothered to fan translate them after that).
I even began to study Japanese but I'm not at the level on which I can read as fluently as in English. So I hope someone rescue Shakugan no Shana and bring all the volumes here.

I too would love to see the rest translated. The existential dread Yuji feels and how he grows out of it along with the rest of the cast was great to see in the anime.

While the series have some volumes licensed by Viz for release and translation, according to my understanding on light novel translation industry in other countries, such right shouldn't be unlimited in term of number of volumes, and there should also be other conditions in the contract that allow actions to be taken whenever necessary. With the length of time passed and with JNC's current relationship with Kadokawa group in mind, there should be something JNC could do to help?

@c933103 At 26 volumes and a really old anime, not to mention rescue, this series would unfortunately be very uneconomical to license in the English industry at this moment. There is virtually no guarantee that there are 2000 people willing to buy the ebook of every volume, plus the fact that it holds up a translation team for 6+ years, when they could translate dozens of shorter more popular series in that time.

Even if It's been a while since I watched Shakugan no Shana but a proper licensed version would make me purchase it and complete it.

The story and story/character development is really good on it.

                                    (Plus I miss Shana's "Urusai/Shut up" )

@legitpancake Is 2000 people buying required for JNC to make a profit from translation? As, in other non-English markets, I have saw lower figures being quoted at breakeven points.

Maybe JNC being based in Western countries have higher running cost and labor cost, but in some other markets I have saw figures down to some hundred copies being cited as breakeven point, and I am talking about physical copies

And I think, Shana, while being a old series, is still very popular, and most people who watch anime nowadays should at least have heard about its name and familiar with its character image, and would probably gave the anime a watch already as well

Not really a good comparison but you can see series like Spice and Wolf or Haruhi from the era with similar popularity are still lingering, with English localization of their novels still continues, which indicates they're profitable

Maybe it is time to revisit this now, now that quite a number of titles have been rescued and relicensed due to collapse of some other publishers.
