Just checked the EMT squared (the animation studio doing this show) wikipedia page and I may have figured out one potential reason this adaption is having so many problems. Just looking at all of this studio's previous shows, the staff have no experience at all adapting light novels, everything they have done up to this point has been from a manga. Hell this is even the first action show this studio has ever done.

The situation with the anime is quite funny actually because normally an anime is created to promote the original source but Ragnarok's anime is so bad that people might get turned off to read the source.

        JNC LN Ranking:
        1st - Rokujouma
        2nd - Realist Hero
        3rd - Bookworm

@bartzbb Wouldn't be the first time something like that happened.

IIRC, EMT Squared previously specialized in making short-form anime (the ones with episodes only a couple of minutes long). Because of that, they tend to focus on quick visual appeal rather than dramatic storytelling.

Their previous experience with normal-length series was Kuma Miko, which they did in collaboration with Kinema Citrus. But that was... well, despite solid production values, the story ended up being dumpster fire with a very, very controversial ending.

IMO, I think EMT Squared misjudged the kind of series MRBE was. They thought the character designs and setting suited their style, and that's why they took the job. It's even possible they've decided to just wing the story from the beginning.

Ditto. I feel bad about the author too. Someone in Japan should start a thread on 2Ch about this.

This was a Crunchyroll co-production. I wish they could have supervised its creation for some quality control...

FWIW, Team Four Star did a first episode review, and I believe they described it as coming full circle: It's so bad that it's good.

Doesn't make me feel any better about it.

Not sure if anyone saw them but this was ANN's review

@shrike_al Not a big deal but let me correct one thing you said, in addition to Kuma Miko they have more recently done at least one more normal length series with Love Tyrant which I don't remember having any serious problems. Though in that case the plot was so random it was probably harder to screw up.

@eternal-wanderer I've watched Love Tyrant. More funny than anything else. Everything taken to the extreme, just for laughs. Total farce comedy.

@eternal-wanderer Oh yeah. I totally forgot about that! Thanks for reminding. I think Love Tyrant is the kind of series that works for them though.

@shrike_al Yeah I don't really think there a terrible studio, Ragnarok was a just poor fit for them as a project. Love
Tyrant was right up their ally though.

I'd say this adaptation is worse than Smartphone or Death March. Seriously that comes full circle so bad its good thing, I dunno if this even qualifies.

I liked Love Tyrant's manga and thought the anime was pretty faithful, so kinda shocked the same team could bork something this badly.

@smashman42 There could be a couple reasons for that, like I mentioned earlier this studio has only ever worked on manga adaptions before so adapting Ragnarok could simply not be in their skill set. Also don't forget that just because it is the same studio it does not necessarily mean it is the same team as Love Tyrant.

@eternal-wanderer True that. I guess a manga basically provides pre-made story boards of everything whereas they have to do it all from scratch with a LN. Plus the same org =/= same team thing on top of that extra difficulty.

This latest episode was something of a step up. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Just watched the dub of the first episode. In terms of voice talent, I have no objections, also, the character designs so far is quite good as well, a unique and visually striking design for each character.

In terms of anime... well, I have issues - if it wasn't for the fact that I've read the LN, I would be severely at a loss at what the blazes is going on. In fact, if this episode is a preview of what the rest of the series will be like, I think it will be completely safe to watch without getting overly spoiled, the pacing is so fast. I mean, it literally is just "Had a battle, had a talk, moved from A to B." And then to pad it out: extreme fan service.

Eh, I think I'll keep up with it for now. See how it goes.

Just watched episode 5. Here's what I think.

                                      spoiler

I'm not dumping this yet, but it might put it on hiatus after they finish volume 3.

Yeah, definitely rushed the story... but still much better quality than it has been so I am feeling a bit better about this show.

                                          Steinporr: "My brother is dead!"

Steinporr: "You guys pushed me to my limits!"
the fight was literally one swipe each of the Einherjar's weapons

This show is garbage. Why do I keep watching?

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks this anime adaptation is subpar. Haven't read the LN yet, but I expect it is 10 times better than this heap of garbage.
