@hyferzftw It's a combination of things. One, my RL is stressful enough that I prefer avoiding certain things in my fiction.

Secondly, a lot of times in fiction, East or West, they use "tragedy" wrongly. A tragedy, classically, is a work where the protagonist's flaws cause bad things to happen. In a lot of cases, "tragic" works in modern fiction skew more towards "X's life sucks." It's not due to poor choices and flaws of their own, but because of "misery poker"-esque the world hating them.

I'll toss in siscon and brocon, in spite of having enjoyed a couple of series in that vein. Those tags just make me want to say "Pass."

@paul-nebeling Are we talking little brother ‘brocon’ or older brother... I have different feelings between my fictions and my facts, but if there’s a shota in the mix, than I might be a bit more interested... It’s not a make or break and really isn’t all that inportant to me, but how many light novels can you say have a Trap? There’s one and a reverse that come to mind, but that’s it for me...

@oathkeeper95 Strictly going of of the tag, not looking at the ages.

After consuming anime/manga/visual novels/light novels/doujins for so long, I've come to accept that in anime Japan, a little sister can only find happiness when she's riding her onii-chan.

'Death Game' in its various incarnations. Nope. Never took a liking to that category...

I'm fine with horror though. Just, not in a death game sort of way...

Anything particularly that irked you about it?

I like Death Game, but I'm not going to defend it to the... death. I know I have horrible tastes and love the drama of it. Death game can be really predictable, and the settings are often highschool (with the game element being a Survivor style ballot box often too). The culprits at this point are pretty played out too.

I was really disappointed in the second Rabbit Doubt game, Judge, so much so that I'm not really sure if I should invest in Secret. So even my tolerance level for death game has a point.

@terrence I'm just not fond of losing characters like that, especially in a game if there isn't any way to prevent such. You could say I prefer the more 'happy' storylines, not exactly fond of tragedies in general...

Outright child rape by an adult (yes, there is a genre for that and snuff with it). Gaslighting. No go.

Psychological torture porn, not for me.

Vampire, or anything "gothic." Although I have found material with less "traditional" vampires to be ok.

Supernatural, although I've found that Japanese literature seems to define this differently. Ghosts and creepy stuff I'm not interested in. High school kids with wacky powers are ok though.

Horror, or particularly suspense or thrillers. I find the stuff boring. I'll read it if it's also mystery, but otherwise, snooze fest. The real world is a whole lot more frightening to me. Comes with living with anxiety for 36 years I guess?

Gratuitous gore or sex. I'm no prude, both have their place. But sometimes authors just love to throw it in there for no good reason.

incest-type situations (save for cousins), gender-bending, GL/yuri, and BL/yaoi. For LN that do have sex in them, the turn-off is hearing about the skinship and orgies. Being a guy, I prefer the one on one love scenes. A few pages later, the MC bangs another. Sure.

"Slave" in a book's description is definitely one I'm usually noping out on.

GL / Yuri tags actually entice me a bit because I do like the drama of that. Just depends on presentation. Like, highschool Yuri is a bit too common, and also too easy (you don't have to approach the realness of how the world perceives it and the laws of Japan, you can hide it behind "it's a school grade phase").

@terrence Death March and Rising of the Shield Hero would have that "Slave" thing to go "Nope" at though. I find both series great.

Shield Hero made me pause while posting... But that also seems like more of the exception to the rule. My word at some of the content in "How Not To Summon A Demon-Lord". I've actually got Death March sitting next to me right now unopened (I really hate the feel of the cover for this one). xC

I wonder how Fremd Torturchan is. I did pick that up.

I don't think I have that one word, since I never saw a synopsis that does a series justice.
However, I think it's all about the feel around the whole series?
Like if it sounds like another isekai with nothing new to present or highschool battle ecchi harem title with no selling point aside from the action and ecchi aspect.
Arguably, I need to, at least, try the 1st volume first to make sure, but some titles are just plain through and through.
                                    Title, synopsis and story...

^ Ideal sort of title for you, methinks. Maybe I should write that one. =P

Actually, I like trying these novels with obscure titles and premises like I am looking forward to Yen press' "Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon" even it sounds stupid~xD

@bloodygaikotsu would you read a series where the MC is reincarnated as a hot Spring where cute girls relax in him.
