Prem vs. Regular Membership (still don't fully get it)

Alrighty, sorry for not understanding fully, but I figure I'll ask here to clarify before I buy anything.
So, with the regular membership, I can read all e-books here, online, correct?
For example, I really want to read "In Another World With My Smartphone," and if I get the regular membership, I can read it here, right?The premium membership lets you get credits each month for free, so that you can own and download the books, and it can also give you additional features of the book, like drawings.
I'm confused about this because when I wanted to read vol. 3, it said:
"Buy books here:-
Ibook
-
amazon
-
other stuff (I can't remember)
-
and... "Go Premium"
So do I need premium to be able to read, or can I read it with just a regular membership?

There are also series on catchup every month, which you can see on the front page news, but In Another World With My Smartphone is not on catchup right now.

Yes, though it's worth noting that the price difference between regular and premium membership is, in fact, the price of 1 premium credit, so you're not really getting it "for free," you're paying for it with the membership.

To clear up sole of these misunderstanding let’s start from the beginning.
J-Novel Club is not like Netflix or Crunchyroll for Light Novels.
A subscription is going to let you read the latest books that are being translated for a series that has not already caught up to the Japanese releases.
So with a series like Smartphone you would only be able to read the first parts of volumes 1 - 20 (the preview parts) and anything that has been translated for volume 21 as it becomes available.
This applies if you get a premium membership or a regular membership.
Getting a membership also gives you access to titles that are put on catchup. Every month different titles are chosen to have all their volumes put back up on the site for users to read. For instance this month you have access to these seven titles.
Premium memberships get access to the premium member forum, a special role in Discord, you receive one premium credit every month, and you can purchase additional credits at a discounted rate of $6/credit USD.
Normal members pay $7/credit USD.
Sorry but J-Novel Club does not publicly comment on any potential licensing decision or acquisitions.

Basically, the reason to get the premium membership rather than the regular one is if you want to be buying many of the final e-books. Both memberships give you access to the pre-pub stuff as long as it's up, but if you're reading the pre-pub stuff, then the premium membership is basically getting you 12 books at $5.50 apiece instead of the normal $7 and then allowing you to buy more at $6 apiece. So, you're saving money on those final e-books. It's designed around folks who want to read the pre-pubs and then later buy at least some of the final versions of the books, whereas if all you want is pre-pub, then you might as well stick with the regular subscription.
Personally, I don't care about pre-pub at all and just want the final e-books. However, I'm still a premium member, because the versions that JNC sells directly have some additional content, and if you buy enough books per year, you actually save money with the premium subscription over buying from a store like Kobo or Amazon (break even is something like 35 - 40 books per year depending on the sales tax you pay at Kobo or Amazon).
But yeah, if you're looking to read everything with pre-pub, then you need to be reading stuff within a month or so of when it's translated, and if you want previous volumes, you'll either need to wait for that series to go on catch-up for a month, or you'll need to buy the final versions of those books.

Personally, I think that a key part of the problem is that you guys call the versions of the books on the site "premium" editions like you call the more expensive subscription "premium." It implies that you need the premium subscription to buy them when you don't. Having distinct terminology would probably help make it less confusing, though I think that a lot of people expecting a Netflix for LNs are going to be confused about the subscription portion regardless, which I expect that no naming scheme will fix. That's just going to need to be explained clearly, which the current FAQ manages for some people but not others.

I agree. Maybe instead of calling it "premium membership" it could be called it something like "super deluxe membership" so it's less confusing. But that's just my two cents.

to me the biggest benefit of premium membership is access to member only forums (some are like a book club/coffee klatch where we are reading at the same time/pace and comment about the story with other readers in the community)...in summary other than forums, the main difference is the included credit for an ebook...but I personally also view my premium membership as 'voting with my wallet' where hopefully my higher tier also equates to 'more' supportI read banned books

Why does income level have to come into the explaination?
The main difference that premium gets you one premium E-book per month while general membership only allows you to read the pre-pubs -
