Episode 2 wasn't even funny to watch, just bad, the constant flashback still make it confusing, they still don't give half they explanations they should give and the visual are still quite bad just with less funny CGI.

I also still wonder why Hajime bother with breaking the cube Yue is in, if she can regenerate can't he just cut what sticking out of the cube?

Yeah, I'm starting to think the script writing on the Ragnarok anime wasn't that bad. I mean it was positively straightforward compared to this nonsense.

If they had just told the story in the order it happened in the scenes would have much more emotional resonance -- now it is just a unwatchable mess.

They maybe should have kept the first episode as is, if they wanted to go straight to the action, but should have used ep2 to tell what happened before he got down in the abyss. Using the opening, which at least I skip in most anime unless the music is nice, to make viewers understand the background stuff is not a good idea.

With this 2nd ep, it seems that they will go with 4 eps/vol after all.

In a light novel only her head was sticking out.
The anime management, if it is not obvious to you by now, has had 0 faith in the project. As such, they tried to employ as many cheap tricks as they could. Among them, is showcasing half naked waifu trapped early on as if screaming "this show have hentai elements, keep watching it please!".

On a side note, Hajime had to use immense amounts of mana, even going so far as drinking ambrosia (holy water) to regenerate his dwindling mana, to get her out of that block. Because he used magic without chanting, Yue also understood that he is the same as her. Later on she reminisced about how she fell in love with that crimson (not purple) mana of his as he was giving his all in order to free her from the eternal imprisonment.

@zing Wouldn't it be even easier if there's only the neck to cut, but yeah it's pretty obvious that they drop the ball and didn't really care about the project after the change of studio.
They really should have keept the old team.

@raitoiro If the old team was bad too, the production committee should've just put more effort into the budget and involvement. Cause this looks like they just went with whoever after they fucked up once and decided that as long as people don't realize it's another travesty until it starts airing, they're safe.

@aruseus493 Looking at the staff for the first version, it seems pretty talented and while Hajime look bad on the main visiual, the rest is okay. Keeping the same staff would have limit the cost, and that money could have been used for better CGI or effects, plus changing the staff will create chaos which could explain the numerous mismatch, chaotic script and bad VA.

Also Arifureta serms to be Overlap biggest series and the one they advertise the most, so they probably gave it more budget than they did for Grimgar anime, but Arifureta's is still way worst so budget likely wasn't the issue.
Keeping the first staff but still delay the anime to work on the characters design and other issues, likely would have been better.

I really like the LN and was looking forward to the anime. After reading the comments...I can't say I'm going to even give it a go... extremely disappointing.

I suppose I'll just wait till it's finished and see how it's viewed as a whole and decide then.

I finally got a chance to check it out. I hate to say this, especially since it's done by the same studio responsible, but the anime really reminds me of Big Order.

I can actually tolerate the animation and CG, and I even like the character designs, but the script is just awful. The story flow is a mess and they made Hajime's reactions way over the top. The choice of voice actors feel strange too.

I get the feeling that the only problem the first version had was the character designs. I mean, that does say a lot about how the staff interprets the source material. But I can't help but wonder how those designs got finalized in the first place. I think this entire fiasco could have been prevented if only someone (someone in the Overlap?) had immediately spoken up.

IIRC in the LN Yue was out of mana and therefore her regenerative abilities would not function. This naturally leads to the question as to why she was imprisoned at all (just deplete her of mana then destroy her, of course there appear to be a few inconsistencies regarding her imprisonment, but I think most of those will be resolved in volume 10 or 11 of the LN (I've read the WN so I have an idea of where the story is going)

I think the comments are too harsh, you might enjoy the anime (you might not)
I believe the adaptation is disappointing, The CGI is clunky, the directing disjointed, and the generally the experience is not up to the awesomeness of the LN

but as I've heard about beer, sex, and pizza : even not very good anime can still be enjoyable

As a matter of fact, ahem, I actually enjoyed Big Order.
It was a mess, but also a BEAUTIFUL mess.

If you like the LN I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not watching the anime. You already know the story so it doesn't matter as much about how the story is told, as there won't be any surprises. It'll give you an opportunity to enjoy having the LN come to life. Even if it is mainly a montage of scenes from the LN, you will know the importance and significance of those scenes.

@zing Then there's no winning cause it's not like the LN artist is any good at drawing action scenes~

Although the manga has better art anyways so still no reason to watch the anime I guess. XD

Holy CGI crap scorpion ... After the 2nd episode, which was slightly better (at least to me), we are right back to "worse than Ragnarok" level. I am really not looking forward to the CGI hydra.... Also nice, how the door already shows that it will have 6 + 1 heads.

It's also funny how they asume that these 30s scenes of the other students provide background on what they are up to.

I was really excited for the anime of this... Arifureta was one of the very first light novels I read and was the reason I "fell in love" with light novels. The first LN especially is one of my favorites. The way the anime butchered it, by rushing through / skipping and didn't properly emphasize what Hajime went through (scenes from before he fell during the training sessions, and even his struggle in the pit, etc.). The anime so far has been a total letdown in my opinion. It doesn't do the greatness (IMO) of this series justice. Quite honestly, it hurt to watch. =/

Maybe I've got crap standards, but I'm not finding it completely terrible. Certainly not to Ragnarok levels of bad.
