Markup breaking Android app render?

I'm frequently seeing what looks like html markup fragments being escaped and truncating text content in the Android app. Typically this surfaces as mangled emphasis tags em><em. Given the context I assume some amount of text was to be italicized and some tag stripping algorithm incorrectly stripping the tags out. For example:

<em>this is some emphasized text!<em> turns into em><em
