Would like more info on how you decide if a series gets a physical release and the process

Honestly I would like as much info about this as possible since I both want to collect them and prefer to read a physical book over E-books. Like which is more important, the series being bought by many, requested in physical form by many or both? How popular does a series have to be to get a physical release? Do you have a deal with e.g seven seas for physical releases or do you make deals for each series separately?
I'm sorry if should have posted this somewhere else instead of support, wasn't sure where to put it but support felt right(I'm not used to making topics). -
Sales of ebooks is the most important factor.
If ebooks are not selling they won’t do a physical run.
There is no exclusive deal with Seven Seas it was a series by series basis.
Now that JNC is gonna do their own physical books Seven Seas will only continue to print the series they have already sub-licensed but they won’t be getting new series. It was mentioned that spin-off Series such as Arifureta Zero will still be on the table SHOULD they wanna do it physically, which makes sense cause they already sub-licensed the main series for physical.
So yeah sales is king if sales aren’t there a physical release probably won’t happen.

so JNC will start printing themself now, it seems I forgot to ask if there is a certain number of sales wanted before physical release and how long it takes before you can buy a physical version of what is already translated, would you know? Sorry asking Even more questions -
@idiarkis the actual number of ebooks sales to get a print run I am unaware of.
You can always go to JNC’s twitter and ask them on Curious Cat.
So far they have announced they will do physical editions of In another World Wity My Smartphone and How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord.

The release date is not in December I believe it is in February, December is just used as a placeholder.
The pre-order for V2 of Smartphone and V1 & V2 of Demon Lord should be going up soon as well.
All have a tentative release month of February 2019 I believe.

To be honest I doubt anyone not affiliated with J novel club can answer those questions.
Not a lot of information has been shared on the physical prints that they are doing as of yet.

If a series looks like it will sell on average 5000 ebooks per volume we would like to print it.
Physical books will go on sale no sooner than 6 months after the ebook goes on sale. -
@sam-pinansky I assume you are aware of distributors that have "print on demand" services, where the books are printed and bound by presses that are essentially huge laser printers?
Rightstuf used to advertise their POD for some titles, and I've bought a couple of books published that way. The quality was better than most trade paperbacks.
There was a bit of a premium over a mass-print paperback, of course.

@someoldguy Sam has discussed print on demand services, and the front color images would be the problem. With Amazon, if you want the frontmatter to be in color, the whole book would have to be in color (which would bump the price up to $30). Also, there aren't very many print on demand services that can handle different paper types at different parts of the book.

For the print on demand I have a thought. Is it is possible to have every JNC title be available for POD. Now obviously there will be some series that will be mass produced and will be in stores but what if someone wants a physical of a series that is not that popular and thus not giving JNC enough money? Well this series would not get mass produced so the only way to get the physical in this case would be POD. As for the colour and the price, maybe have two options? Colour or no colour? That would be something JNC would have to choose and if the buyer is willing to give that much money just to have colour.

Personally speaking I really want several JNC titles on my physical shelves, but what I care most about is quality. I just don’t think I could support POD in fear of low quality paper and binding.

@rahul-balaggan if there is low quality fir POD I think then I can see why POD may not work. However I think having a choice of getting a physical over not having one I would choose having one and POD can be useful for series that just will not get mass printed.

I'd honestly rather import a quality physical release from Japan than an inferior physical PoD version.

Personally, I am really interested in POD—since majority of the titles I am interested in here usually ain't the popular ones like "Outbreak Company", and I really want to have them on my shelf!
