@hyferzftw No offense to @Terrence's attempt (good effort!)

That wasn't my effort, unfortunately. I didn't even read it, hence the spoiler tag (I don't look at synopses if I can help it). x)

        It was from here:

Kodansha has a big sale going on on Bookwalker. So I'm looking through some of their stuff.

This one looks Death Game esque? Like Fate Extra? IDK.

@myskaros I find the story good, particularly Hiiro, his character is refreshing as I’ve seen a lot of protagonists of isekai stories with common character personalities establish harems, but he is competent, yet dense to other’s affection towards him and is a “travel-at-my own-pace” character who wants to live his own life freely in another world. Also, in the fan-translation for the light novel, despite having overpowered Magic, he still faces difficult obstacles that he risk his life to overcome (particularly over trivial reasons). To summarize, I like protagonist’s unique character, facing challenges along his journey, and also, I love the tsukkomis in the interactions that Hiiro causes.

This one has been getting some big promotion. It's technically a novel label, but it's an Isekai with beautiful cover art and full color insert images at the start of the book. It even has an English title on the cover:

"The Hero is Invincible, but 'Too Cautious'"

            alt text

            https://bookwalker.jp/debe23a431-21ac-4760-924d-208f3abb8c3d/?acode=WpfPW3yk

Appears to be a comedy about a hero who over prepares (the insert shows him wanting to buy 3 sets of the same armor; a spare, and a spare for the spare).

Publisher is Kadokawa. So along with it being a novel, that's, like, two strikes against JNC getting it. T.T

I seem to recall that, when I was looking into fan translations to find suggestions for this very thread, Word Master was the first breath of fresh air in that it was actually readable English. Although, having a good fan TL can be a demerit in terms of Sam picking it up.

Depends if the TLer is willing to play ball with JNC!

It depends also if they have a Patreon or something similar too I guess. That's kind of a grey area.

@terabyte @myskaros Sam actually did say something to me on the subject. Improving one's ability to translate and having a love for the subject were in there.

@terabyte Don't get me started on translators with patreons.

It's just way too close to actually making money off another person's work for me. The person translating Hello Work went to Patreon. Allegedly they'll shift off patreon when they find another host, but I'm a bit suspicious. :)

@dtta Patreon is a great platform for monetizing one's hard work. It's also really, really easy to use to monetize the hard work of other people, too....

Yeah. I mean, I'm more than willing to donate to a translator now and then. But having a translation be behind a Patreon, so only those who pay you can see it? Wayyy too close to translating for money for my tastes, which is hinky off another's work without contracts and so on.

I don't know if someone's requested it already, but I'd like to request Monster Tamer’s Fluffy Master-Apprentice Life (Mamonotsukai no Mofumofu shitei Seikatsu) from Hobby Japan.

@dtta It's not really close as much as that exactly what it is. You have to think about Crunchyroll's model too. For a subscription fee, you get early access to anime in HD quality. Free accounts get access to the episodes a week later in LQ only and with ads. Translators that are using patreon are selling early access to translations of something they don't own the rights to and then everyone else can get it later.

Pretty much yeah. I can see vague times when it might be okay to have a Patreon, but combine it with hiding the translations behind Patreon, and ... well.

Oh well. I have JNC. :)

Pretty much the only time I can condone Patreon is when it's used as a glorified PayPal link. Sure, I can buy server costs, material expenses, and rattling your tin can for alms, but holding your copyright-infringing translations ransom is just disgusting.

                                    Got a request. :3

                                    Potion-danomi de Ikinobimasu!

publisher: K Lanove Books (Kodansha) (3 Volumes, Ongoing)

                                    Summary:

This is an Isekai series about a woman (Kaoru) that dies due to God's mistake (sound familiar?). After a lot of negotiation and half-berating the Goddess of the new world she's going to, she picks out her cheat ability to create potions. Reincarnating at around the age of 13, Kaoru begins her journey in this other world where her high intellect and abilities keep getting her into trouble with nobility.

I've been reading the (poorly) scanlated manga adaptation and Kaoru is absolutely a lot of fun. Her cheat ability to create any potion she wants is more like an accessory to her journey as she mostly relies on her wit and sharp personality to get her through various situations. She's pretty damn great as she really knows how to speak her mind regardless of who she is talking to and absolutely refuses to be taken advantage of.

So time for you to license it @Sam-Pinansky. :3

I've read the manga adaptation for that one too. Mitsuwa has a really OP ability. However, she tends to make weird decisions and lives in the moment rather than fully utilizing her ability. It's kind of her charm I guess that she tries to act smart and sharp, but actually comes across a bit more ditzy in reality.

I just remembered one I used to read some time ago but the fan translation stopped midway through the second arc.

                                          Lv. 999 Villager.

It did have lots of game systems, but the interesting part was that it was ingrained into the fantasy setting. A fantasy setting where levels, jobs and skills simply were part of life and people just took 'em for granted. And there was some interesting world-building that made it apparent that this was some sort of post-apocalyptic future, as "videogames" exist (at the very least arcade machines), but they are very rare ancient machines that nobody knows how to make anymore, and as such are very expensive to use. I really miss this one. I'd definitely buy it if it was licensed.
