We should have theme days where someone posts a theme and we request something we want that fits it.

@aruseus493 Here is s aTheme then: Double Protagonists, a series with two core main characters such as Spice and Wolf and No Game No Life. Sherlock Holmes is the Protagonist of his Story but Doctor Watson is the Main Character.

My suggestion for this theme is : I Was a Sword When I Reincarnated

This can Rival Yen Ons Reborn as a Vending Machine

Dual protagonists you say? Hmm. Let's have a looksie (I like triangle relationship stuff, and even good stuff with dual protagonists like "Attacking the Dungeon With My Boss Is OT Work" don't feature the guy on the cover, so this is a challenge).

If Sakurako-san counts, then that (the male protagonist bothers a lot of people though).

          alt text

You mentioned Sherlock Holmes. This basically operates on that same principle (adult woman the detective / bone examiner, her assistant the highschooler is the main character).

For the theme of duel protagonists, I can think of several.

            • Zettai ni Hatarakitakunai Dungeon Master ga Damin wo Musaboru made - A series about a summoned dungeon master and his blonde loli dungeon core. Published by Overlap with 7 volumes so far.
            • The World God Only Knows - Light Novel side stories to the manga original series, I actually own both Japanese volumes. This fits well with the theme as we have Keima and his assistant like character Elsie.
            • Risou no Himo Seikatsu - A series about a guy that moves to another world to marry the Queen of a country. It's about him getting used to life as a Prince Consort. The perspective frequently shifts between him and the Queen as she tries her hardest to run a country while also desiring to make her husband happy despite his open attitude to working.

These are all series I'd love to be licensed, but for the main theme here as my submission, I'll go with:

            86

Publisher: ASCII Media Works (Dengeki Bunko Label)

This is a war series. When an Empire declares war, they send out autonomous robots to invade the surrounding countries. They have become known as Legion. The Republic of San Magnolia responded not by coming together as a country, but by stripping the rights of any non-pure-blooded citizen and putting them on the front lines. Those that have lost their basic human rights have been labelled as Eighty Sixers to signify the those outside of the 75 districts that make up the republic. Our first protagonist is Lena, a handler living in the central district whose job is to direct the soldiers beneath her to fight off the waves of Legion. The second protagonist is Shin, a soldier leading the squad beneath Lena that goes by the callsign Undertaker. One is a soldier who has become a legend of his own while the other is a handler that seeks to keep her troops alive at all cost. The story really shows the two sides of their world and does a great job of having a politically dramatic series in the midst of war as Lena has to deal with an unruly squad while learning more about her own country.

            Volume 1 Cover

I've requested this before and I'll do it again. The cover for this is one of my favorite for LN series in general because of the composition. We have two contrasting protagonists in which a first glance will show them appearing opposed to each other. Further inspection reveals a lot more though. Shin located on the left is holding his hand as if holding a gun as which is a display of his goal in the story. It's not pointed at Lena though. Lena on the other hand is crying while extending her hand out as if to offer aid, yet it is missing Shin. The protagonists are back to back, yet looking in each others' directions which shows a major difference in perspective. Lena is backed in a clean uniform holding a clipboard with a blue/white background to show off her pure-blood position. Shin is in military fatigues with scars on his face with a red/brown backdrop to show his background of being directly in the war to protect the country that pretends to still be pure.

Overall, from the first volume I've read, it's an absolutely fantastic series that I think will absolutely get an anime adaptation one day.

@aruseus493 you beat me to it with 86. I really want this one, I just hope the fan translator is right and this gets picked up quickly.

Well, for dual protagonists, first thing that comes to mind is Absolute Duo but the anime was quite crappy, never got around to read the novels... How about Heavy Object?? Qwenthur and Havia certainly fit the dual protagonist thing. Much like 86, it's a military action story, lots of mecha wanking and a badass premise about two guys that become a legend by being the only ones that could destroy one of the eponymous mechas without a mecha of their own.

With how popular it is in Japan and how the publisher twitter talk about it, I have feeling that it might get licensed by Yen Press soon.

                Duel protagonists, huh?
                Something like
                A Lollypop or a Bullet
                Publisher: Kodakawa Shoten

                Usotsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan
What I find really interesting about this one is the fact that our narrator is Mii-kun a.k.a. the liar.
So, it's safe guess to treat him as unreliable narrator.

But I think what I will go with this time is

                Seitokai Tantei Kirika
                alt text

                How to describe this...
Think of Hyouka, small-scale mysteries with underlying drama, but instead of a whole club as main character, we have a sleuth, Kirika, and the narrator (her Watson), Hikage.
I think inferiority complex plays huge role in this one.

                Publisher: Kodansha LIGHTNOVEL

                        Let's do another theme.

                        Competition of Publishers

Pick a series from another publisher, and pick something you consider similar for J-Novel Club to compete with.

To compete with KonoSuba, I'd go with Kono Sekai ga Game da to Ore dake ga Shitteiru. Both series feature a similar style of over the top absurd comedy. But I've requested this one before.

So instead, let's compete with Sword Art Online with an obscure title I've dug up. :3

Death Game kara Hajimeru MMO Slow Life

                          Publisher: Fujimi Shobo

We've seen Sword Art Online where the first arc is about escaping a death game. We've gotten The New Gate (fan-translated) which is about going from a death game to an Isekai series. Now let's have a Death Game where the protagonist isn't even trying to end it. Death Game kara Hajimeru MMO Slow Life from what I could dig up about it, is a slice of life series where the protagonist is living a romcom/harem life inside the game.

                          Volume 1 Cover

Ok, another kinda cliche Request at this point (I lost track how many times even I made this request):

Chivalry of a Failed Knight (Rival Asterisk War)

A great series where there is a real romantic relationship that actually goes somewhere.

I'd like to see "Knights and magic" (it brought me here in my search for light novel translations, as I did not know they existed), but when I've done a search for it, the response given previously is "it's by Hero Bunko" as if that explains everything.

Could someone clue me in please?

@paulnamida To be fair, the Asterisk War LN is really pretty good. The adaptation was fairly lackluster though. A lot of the complaints about Asterisk War is due to either the adaptation or the person just wanting to hate on it. Though I do think personally Chivalry is better.

well, Digibro has a whole Video series about why Asterisk Wars sucks and he gives some genuine reasons why and it involves the writing of the show witch the LN would have (though it is possible it wont be as bad). This video series ends with a 2-part comparison with Chivalry (witch highlights the flaws in Asterisk War even more). I dont believe a person will Hate something because they just want to hate it, though if you go into something expecting to hate it that will influence your opinion; I watched Chivalry expecting to hate it yet I was pleasantly surprised. I believe in a sort of Universal quality, A good series will always be a good series and a bad series will always be a bad series and these series will ultimately reach their quality in the eyes of the general people. To argue the Adaption point, I do think adaption can "ruin" a story but if the adaption remains as faithful as it possibly can than the writing and characters should be at around the same level right? say if The Minotaur Fight in Danmachi had the same animation Quality as SAO fights (SAO fights are really boring, flashy lights don't make good fights), That Minotaur fight would still be good (maybe not great but still good) and this is because of the writing in the fight.

Edit: I believe to some extent you can judge a series by the quality of there fights, this reins true if you compare the Minotaur fight in Danmachi vs the Gleam Eyes fight is SAO too.

Actually, Digibro is the guy I was referring to. Some his stuff is valid, a lot of it isn't in a lot of respects. Some of his examples come off as "THIS SHOW IS TOTALLY NOT REALISTIC! RAR!" Kinda like people who bag on superheroes or bitch about the Endor Holocaust and other stupidity. Not to mention the things he mentions that are actually contradicted by the books and anime itself.

Not saying it's high literature, but it's not nearly as bad as people say. But much like SAO, it became a big meme thing where people liked to bag on Asterisk War to show how developed an anime person they are, not like those PEONS who like that stuff. It's basically virtue signalling, anime-style.
