@enternal Oh wow, after seeing that illustration in the comments, I now kind of hate myself for reading and enjoying those volumes. Ren'ya is not wearing just any uniform (I expected the standard 98), that's the Type 5 officer uniform. It's basically the Japanese equivalent of the Totenkopf uniforms and have a specific association with the "extra innings" officers. There is no mistake on the context, there are standard uniforms that could have been depicted instead, this was a conscious decision on the author's part.

@terrence Is this meant to imply that Renya was

          spoiler

I mean, Renya is supposed to have been some sort of badass killing machine before Loli God got Her hands on him. While I don't think it's totally relevant, implying he was that person would be a bit of a slap in the face.

@Paul-Nebeling Basically they're saying "the main character of this story killed people at the Nanking Massacre, was never caught or punished for it, died at an old age, then became an isekai hero."

Whoever said nothing's impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

@myskaros We're all in trouble when someone looks at DRIFTERS again and realizes who the antagonist is.

Ok yeah I get why this was a problem. I was bummed to not be able to finish the series but after reading all of that I have no problem leaving it unfinished, don’t think I could read another volume.

MINE is probably very happy that he wrote under a pseudonym right now.

Wait, so was Sam forced to take down volume 3 by Hobby Japan, or did he do it out of concern for the future or something? If they were going to cancel the translation, at least finish after volume 3 is published.

Out of concern. Just in case JNC loses the license, fails to deliver vol 3, and ends up paying penalty to Amazon. This was mentioned in the other thread.

I do hope we can at least get volume 3 though.

Hopefully talks with HJ will be done today.

@alocervancouver Wait, what? Was there an illustration like that? Could you point me to it? If so not only the author but the artist and perhaps the editor are in deep sh... as well since they got the reference and still gave it the greenlight.

I just don’t know what to make of all this.

On the one hand MINE holds some pretty horrible views, on the other hand I am enjoying the series and the works themselves don’t really have anything overtly racist in them.

Can you separate the story from the Author, I mean shakespeare was an Anti-Semite but his works are still celebrated, C S Lewis has been accused of being racist but people still read Narnia.

In the end doesn’t look like I’ll get to make a choice for myself on the issue, as I doubt the series will be continuing on J Novel Club.

@mmkop Yeah, it's linked in the reddit post. It's pretty damning.

Edit: Can't find it right now at the link that @Enternal gave anymore. I think someone took it down.

I actually really enjoyed this series, wish ppl wouldn't get so offended by someone's fictional story even if they refer to past events in real life. I mean where else do you grab stories from? You make it from your memories or things you hear about or imagine. In this case he used a past history of Japan which is not something he did himself, but simply borrowed it for the main characters backstory. I believe there are many stories about past histories that are very dark in real life, however we shouldn't let that affect our entertainment. If this affects entertainment just imagine back when Avatar came out and people complained it was all about the whites killing off all the first nations during colonization.

Hopefully he can continue the series down the road even if the anime is cancelled.

@enternal No, its not. Because you shouldnt judge a work by the creator. For example an actor, a beautiful picture or a skilled football player. You should value their professional work.

Personally, I'd rather not value these people with my money if I can help it. Don't want to give them more cash and fame so they can spread their vileness.

Utterly disappointing giving in to easily triggered sjws. The hypocrisy is these same people are openly rascist towards the japanese and can get away it. Really, what has the world come to?

On a related note though the recent FGO Japan event has triggered sjw Koreans as well. If I was Delight Works though i'd just block all Korean IPs, they're not supposed to be playing the JP server either way. Also the material they're offended over was in the original material in the compace manga, why were they not triggered then? bloody hypocrites.

Simplest answer to everything is if you don't like it don't read it. I wish those people learned that instead of bitch and whine on social media until it gets taken down so no one can enjoy it.

                                          @catstorm Oh there are more.

                                          T. S. Eliot was clearly anti-semitic.

Roald Dahl identified itself as an anti semite (and people still love Charly and the chocolade fabric).

Jack London was racist (he advocated that socialism, which he found to be the ideal form, is only meant for white people)

                                          HP Lovecraft was a racist.

Not that this makes it right. But this makes oneself think about how we perceive authors and their works.

Anime Herald did an article on this and gave some rough translation of the author's racist tweets and his apology as well as Hobby Japan's response.

I put the racist tweets in spoilers for those people who don't want to read them:

                                            Hobby Japan's response:

                                            "Dear Customers,

We would like to thank you very much for your continued patronage. Hobby Japan, Co., Ltd. truly accepts the expressions in a work can hurt the feelings of many people, regarding HJ Novels’ [New Life +] Young Again in Another World.

Although we feel that it is important to judge a work on its own merit, we recognize that the tweets sent by the author in the past were inappropriate.

We will carefully deal with future handling of such titles.

We apologize to everyone, including readers who were made uncomfortable.

We would also like to apologize to any inconvenience caused to bookstores, distributors, and all other related parties."
