I think I'm gonna try Smartphone, the anime was terrible (the abridged version is gold tho) but I kinda want to see what the LN is like.

It was fun for a while, but I dropped out around vol. 11 or 12. The series' original schtick could only carry it along so far, and the stuff brought in to replace it didn't really interest me.

It's fun. One of the faults of the anime, probably done for time reasons, is it cut out a lot of the material where Touya was training, crafting, learning. That made it feel like he was succeeding without earning anything.

He is another overpowered character, massively so as it goes on. The harem size is also overdone to the point that you really need that list of characters. Despite those points it's still a fun read.

I need to read Magic in this Other World Too Far Behind (pretty sure I read 1-4).

Podcast I'm in is covering JK Haru shortly, so that works out pretty good if I want to read through some of Summer again (I did buy the first one though for rereading last month).

Magic 1-4 or 5 were the good ones for me. After that it descends into a mix of the original story and cliched teen harem comedy.

              Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

This went on catch-up a little before I joined JNC in September 2018, and I've been waiting ever since. I've read it gets weird later on but I liked the anime so I've wanted to give it a try.

Arifrueta Zero - I should try this since I've read the main series

Campfire Cooking, Infinite - fun, but I already own then.

Yes, Grimgar! I've been waiting for a catchup to bridge the gap between where the physicals are and where the digital releases are at. I started reading the physicals after learning about the series through the anime and before I became a J-Novel Club member. After I became a member I decided to start following the weekly releases instead once there was a catchup and sold my physicals. When I have more money I might buy the premium ebooks for the bonuses and if I have more space as well maybe the physicals again, although I don't really like the quality and typesetting of Seven Seas's release. It's way too bulky for how long the books actually are and the covers look cheap. I like J-Novel's in-house physicals a lot better.

For the others, I'm already caught up with Infinite Dendrogram and Campfire Cooking. I might try Arifureta Zero if I have time. I read part of the main series last time it was on catchup and thought it was decent enough that I'd likely read more if I had the time next time it went on catchup, although the harem was annoying and I think some of JNC's other series that have gotten less hype are actually quite a bit better.

Favorite JNC Series (tried): Bookworm, Faraway Paladin, Infinite Dendrogram, Grimgar, Crest/Banner of the Stars, Der Werwolf, The Skull Dragon's Precious Daughter, Apothecary Diaries

It's pretty far down in my ranking of JNC titles. It has a long list of eye-roll worthy cliches but I enjoy it despite itself and have made it through 9 of the 10. (I'm still reading it I just haven't gotten around to #10 yet.)

I was trying to push myself through the latest Grimgar, glad to see I don't have to (put it off until later in the month).

New catch up, this one will last 1 month and a half until the end of February 2020 and features 6 series (2 of which are complete):

                      • Bluesteel Blasphemer ► Complete series (4 volumes).
                      • Lazy Dungeon Master ► Volume 9 currently being translated.
                      • My Big Sister Lives in a Fantasy World ► Complete series (7 volumes).
                      • Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles ► Volume 9 currently being translated.
                      • The Unwanted Undead Adventurer ► Volume 5 currently being translated.
                      • Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf! ► Volume 3 currently being translated.

                      ===

I'm caught up with the 4 ongoing translations and I remember losing interesting in Blueesteel around volume 2 (and hearing the series got axed/ending rushed made me drop it even faster). I'm interested in reading Big Sis so I just need to find the time.

I enjoyed Big Sis. Some people thought the ending was weak but I thought the final battle was fine and fit the rest of the story. There is also some sly humor now and then including jokes that just happen and are never explained, a little like Monty Python or Buckaroo Banzai ("what's with the watermelon?").

                        Hopefully that isn't over-selling it.

Big Sis was fun at first, but the premise really didn't support the length of the series; and as it started slipping into a more straightforward story, I started losing interest.

For me it was about the right length. I could see it being one book shorter with good editing but not much more than that.

I was happy that it didn't drag on like Little Apocalypse which went on 5 or 6 books past its welcome for me. The author seemed to be plugging in some other type of stock character just to crank out a new volume instead of having any fresh ideas, and didn't have the courage to advance the relationships at even Smartphone's glacial pace.

I agree. Big Sis was a fun series that was more or less the right length that used concept that worked well for the story and characters. Some of the references are explained in the guides that come with the premium version so there is value in getting them if you enjoy the series.

                                Stay shiny, y'all.

I was happy to be able to bridge the gap between physicals and prepubs for Grimgar last month. Didn't get to Arifureta Zero but that wasn't a priority for me. Was already caught up on the other two, although I haven't made my way to the newest volume that's currently in publication for Campfire Cooking yet.

For this month, I'm caught up on The Unwanted Undead Adventurer and am working my way through the current volume of Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf! I dropped Seirei Gensouki and have no intention of picking it back up since I found it boring after the first bit. I dropped Lazy Dungeon Master too, in that case since it seemed to be getting increasingly lewd. I'm interested in Bluesteel Blasphemer and will probably check it out. I may give My Bis Sister Lives in a Fantasy World a shot too, but it's not high on my list and I have a lot of physical backlogs I'd probably rather work on.

I think Big Sis was better before the final "Fate" esque story in the final few volumes.

It would have been nice if romance went somewhere in it.
