      Name: Earl & Fairy
      The Earl and the Fairy
      Hakushaku to Yousei
      伯爵と妖精
      Author: Mizue Tani
      Artist: Asako Takaboshi
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo, Supernatural
      Publisher: Shueisha
      Volumes: 33 (Complete)
      Manga Adaption: Yes
Description: The story is set in Victorian England. It follows the adventures of 17-year-old Lydia Carlton, who is nicknamed the “Fairy Doctor” due to her interest in fairies. Her life takes a 180-degrees turn when she meets Edgar J.C Ashenbert, the “Legendary Blue Knight Count” and his crew on a sea voyage to London. Edgar hires her as an adviser during his quest to obtain a treasured sword that was supposed to be handed down to him by his family.

This is definitely the best victorian era and fairies themed light novel I've ever read and believe exist. The story is exiting and although long, doesn't get boring in the least. The manga adaption already got licensed (the anime adaption I think too) and I'm wondering and probably many others too, why this popular novel still isn't. This is definitely a must read for all fantasy and romance readers.

It would be a shame, if this novel doesn't get licensed just because it's too long. The story is totally awesome, there isn't a novel which would deserve getting licensed more than this one.

Man I didn’t look at this closely but a 33 volume Victorian era LN focused around fairies sounds really interesting.

I'm upvoting, because I just love this novel. But I won't really get my hopes up for it getting licensed, because it's probably way too long... At this point I'm wondering, if J-Novel Club is simply way too scared of licensing a novel of this length, even if there are many readers who are craving for this.

You seem awfully excited about the shoujo label with JNC? I am not sure that is needed at all... But if it is that important to you, you could do your part in promoting it mayhaps?

I would just hand over my paycheck for the chance of this. I own about half in Japanese as well as the manga and anime...

@claire-lilly Me too! I loved the anime years ago, and I’ve got a volume of the manga but haven’t read it yet. I usually find light novel manga adaptations less engaging than either the light novels themselves or the anime, so I’m not nearly as excited by that being licensed than the novel.

After some thought I don‘t think 33 volumes are too much anymore. If J-Novel club license it, it will also get a digital release, which doesn‘t take much space, so I don‘t see a reason why this novel shouldn‘t get licensed. There are many isekai and adventure novels, who have much more volumes and still get licensed, so why not this one too. I would definitely buy it!!! And like @Claire-Lilly I‘m also totally hyped, that J-Novel club etablished the shoujo label. Hopefully this novel will finally gets picked up now.

If JNC licence it, it would be digital before anything and maybe physical one day. But space isn't really the problem with licensing long series, the real issue is that you can't really stop translating it once you've started (well you could but it would mean loosing customers and jp publishers' faith). So if you license a long series you may end up trapped translating volume for a price higher than what you can gains from it, for a very long time.

There are many isekai and adventure novels, who have much more volumes and still get licensed, so why not this one too.

Maybe they exist but I can't think of any licensed isekai or adventure novels which come close to 33 volumes, aside from Rokujouma but this one had special circumstances.
And all the longer series recently licensed like Highschool DxD (25 vol) or Mushoku tensei (22 vol), had massive fan base which justified takking the risk, something that novel doesn't really seems to have.
The series seems interesting so I also hope it can one day be licensed but I don't think just JNC establishing a shoujo label is enough to get your hopes up.

Haaahhh, all this talk about the length of the novel is really tiring. The story is really good, worth licensing. That‘s it. It doesn‘t matter, that the novel is completed with 33 volumes.
And I don‘t always want to get novel series for men, in which they only boast their ego about how great they are, how many girls they can have at the same time and how the can save the world only with their muscles (cheat powers) and no brain (at least it feels like this). It is getting boring, I want more novels for girls (the 5 shoujo novels are a good beginning). Take a risk, man!!!

They are taking a risk, starting up J-Novel Heart was that risk, they licensed 6 new titles for that label, now it is time to wait and see how those titles do (sales wise).

Sorry but J-Novel Club does not publicly comment on any potential licensing decision or acquisitions.

I know you're just passionate about stuff you want to read, but this is a very ignorant thing to say. It does matter, because if JNC, a business, cannot make money, then we can't afford to pay translators or editors or purchase more licenses. If it's that good and the length/cost does not matter to you personally, then you should hire a professional translator to translate it for you privately.

Whoever said nothing's impossible never tried slamming a revolving door.

@rahul-balaggan I think, that this risk was quite worth it. I can only speak for myself, but I'm quite happy with four out of the six recently licensed shoujo titles and will definitely buy them.
I just hope, that they suddenly won't stop translating them, I don't want to stand there with some uncompleted series (translation wise).

@clarabelle I am happy they took this leap (for reasons beyond Shoujo LNs that I won't really get into).

I am currently enjoying every Heart title that has already made it's way to the site, however we won't really know if it was worth the risk (from a business standpoint) until the volumes are out and if they sell or don't sell...

and J-Novel Club has never dropped a series due to low sales, so even if they don't sell that won't mean they stop working on the titles they already acquired.

It might mean less Shoujo titles in the future but that is a whole other topic.

Sorry but J-Novel Club does not publicly comment on any potential licensing decision or acquisitions.
