      The Step-Exes anime started today.

I watched the first episode, and I'm liking it so far.

Interesting storytelling choice: Nowhere in the entirety of the first episode does it explain that Yume and Mizuto used to date each other in middle school. You're left to infer that from the title and the way they interact with each other (and short visual-only flashbacks of the two of them looking like middle school nerds in a library).

No OP. It dove straight into the story and didn't let up. We did get an ED at the end though (unless that was the OP and we didn't get an ED).

I see Higashira in the OP/ED and the key art, so I'm guessing we're going a few volumes in over the course of the anime.

@pcj would be pretty hard to drag a full season out of a single LN volume, and Higashira is from V2 so unsurprising.

I wrote a bit about this on Discord.

There is, quite literally, not a single word of narration or internal monologue. This makes it weird, particularly since this is a story about a pair of introverts who are bad at expressing themselves. I respect the art of "show, don't tell" but them screaming at each other mentally while trying to keep a poker face is part of what makes the novels good (as well as similar stories like Kaguya-sama) and that's completely absent here. Their personalities aren't on display at all.

I'll give it another episode in case they're trying to pull something, but I don't like what they did in the first episode.

I pointed out later after I watched the episode that there's not much, but there is a little bit of internal monologue. After they decide their rule of treating each other like siblings, and then later for Yume after her bath being the times I remember. It definitely needs more though.

It's sad, really. I wanted to hear "In what could only be described as a folly of youth" six times per episode.

Jokes aside, I actually enjoyed the episode. Let's see how it goes from here.

@Crimson-Wise You joke, but I would've loved to hear that at least once in the first episode. So iconic (for better or worse lol)

Like the character designs. Like the voice actors. Not missing the internal dialogs (yet).

Need to look up the cast list and wait impatiently for the next episode.

                    It seemed well done.
I'll agree it would be nice to hear more of the internal snark, but they're looking to be moving forward at a fair clip so the internal snark needs to be at a sustainable level; we don't want it dropped entirely later on due to time constraints, so a reduced level, provided it's gems, must needs suffice.
Good selection of VAs, the animation seems spot on, and while I don't recall the soundtrack just now it didn't jar; not recalling the soundtrack when having narcoleptic symptoms is kinda meaningless as a judgement, and I am having such symptoms just now.

@pcj Brought a tear to my eye :) It's so nice to see things from the LN brought to life in anime form. Wish they could've done more of the scenes, but it's understandable that they had to skip over things given their 12-episode constraint

Watching the ED, I was torn between cute and creepy. I'm wondering if we'll get two ED's voices by the separate VA's. It's been done before.

Episode 3 is up. It starts with the boxers in Yume's room and ends with Mizuto asking her out on their date. The Minami tease seemed more obvious here, but that could just be a spoiler effect. The graphics were funny though. Still slogging thru volume 1. I'm going to guess two more episodes to wrap it up. So maybe into volume 3 by the end of the cour?

                              Got our second.

                              Also, Yume's got it bad.

Episode 4 covers volume 1 from 70.6% to 89 1% as measured by Moon+ Reader Pro. Some minor shuffling and changes of events, but otherwise pretty much straight out of the LN.

I'll revise my estimate to say we'll get all of volume 3.

                                Loving the anime.

@Crimson-Wise From the other POV even.

And we started at 26.7% into volume 2 with our third installment of the youthful indiscretion. From there is pretty much straight from the LN including Kawanami and Minami sniping at each other. Both couples finishing each other's sentences was much better live. Did anyone else get a Yuno Gasai vibe from Yume at the drink fountain?

The episode ended at 43.4%, so I would say we are still on track to at least finish volume 3. Mathematicaly, they are on a pace to complete 3.442 volumes. Next week will make it a bit more clear if they are going to try to squeeze in volume 4.

It looks like we started around 45.2% into volume 2, I think. It ended around 70.0%. That puts my estimate for how much the anime will cover back down to around 40% of volume 4. That would mean we might get to the start of... (Spoiler for those that aren't current on the LN)

                                    spoiler

We did get to see Higashira brought to life in this episode. While I will call it the director's decision, did anyone else think she sounded a little too mature/old? To my ears, she sounded like a college age girl. The also toned down some of the physical interaction between her and Mizuto. They did nail the appearance and behavior around Yume and Minami though.

Let's see what next week brings.

                                    ETA
There really wasn't any significant movement on the estimated of what will be completed. What I did do was bounce it against the available LN.

@Paul-Nebeling to be fair, I've found Higashira's descriptions on the novels to be all over the place. Like she was quiet, unemotional, yet awkward, yet an unfiltered ball of chaos. I never know what to expect from her, which is pretty much her character, including how is she supposed to sound.

I was actually pretty impressed that there was absolutely zero mention of Higashira's boobs in her introductory episode. Especially since in the novel it was the first thing Yume and Akatsuki talked about to each other about her and used it to describe her constantly. In the anime, so far, she's been wearing clothing that hides her size well, and frequently sitting in positions that hides them as well. The novel kinda made it sound like she was defined by her boobs at first, and the anime has done a very good job to make that not be what everyone thinks about her first. (in spite of the insane closeup of them jiggling in the OP).

I was thrown by that, too. Reading the novel I always imagined her as a short stack. Her being taller than Yume threw me off. :-)
