Yeah Robotech was the first I remember but were things like The Lost Cities of Gold or whatever anime? I remember ordering the VHS of the first volume of Dangaioh and I was so excited to see anime with subtitles!

For manga I bought Mai, Xenon, Kamui and all those early Eclipse/Viz titles.

I actually knew Star Blazers was originally Japanese. So that and Kimba, I suppose. My first fansub would have been Dirty Pair in 1989. :-)

@the-green-death I'll sing that refrain with you as I grew up on Robotech, Voltron, and G-force. First actual light novel was Onegai Teacher, 1st manga was probably Oh! My Goddess. For bonus points I met my wife in the Anime club in college and our fan sub distributor was the lady that married Largo, of Megatokyo's Piro and Largo.
