I was just looking at some LNs, and one looked kind of interesting and dark. Then I read "vampire" in the description... Nope! Twilight style Vampire teenage drama has killed that term. I suppose I don't mind vampires in comedy, but vampires or demons with Shoujo looking covers is an instant "nope" for me.

"Harem" is another one that kills some buzz for me.

Sometimes "Tragic" can be a buzzkill too because I'd rather read the book not knowing it's a tragedy going in than to read it waiting for the shoe to drop, characters to die / get ill. It changes the entire reading experience if you know it's a tragedy.

I saw some nope out of reading the newest JNC release because they saw it was a "Comedy" and "Slice of Life". Of course, I like these, so these terms don't bother me (unless the SOL has no relationship stuff, like a waste of time anime such as "New Game!").

I can't do horror. Scary shit is scary. Closest to horror I'll touch are the Chaos;Head/Child anime series.

I do get a lot of anxiety if I read some creepy pasta type stuff / those "scariest video game characters" threads just before bed and I'm alone in the house, lol.

Did you try Ao-Oni or Yume Nikki?

I actually would really love to see some crazy Virtual Reality horror stuff. I don't think developers experiment enough with AI. I'd have my enemies speeding up and slowing down, have them taking serpentine routes to get to you, jumping around for the heck of it just to scare you, maybe have them crawl on the walls. You would absolutely hate me since I'd make my game appear to be sunshine and roses like Madoka Magica did in its promotion. 👻🕷️

Nope, horror really isn't my thing. I have nothing against horror itself, but I just can't deal with it.

For Japanese media, not so much. That's why I like it. Japanese things typically don't have the propagandistic tropes that repel me. It's more of a question of whether I'm the target audience for a given work.

Using anime as an example, if I see the promotional picture that has a cute girl surrounded by a bunch of tall, thin guys dressed like models. I know immediately that ain't for me.

Mh for books I would say I don't like horror. On the otherside I love horror movies. I don't know but watching is more appealing in that genre (at leats for me).

Other than that I don't particularly mind any other genre.

Most of the time I avoid anime adaptions of light novels with only one cour covering 3+ volumes because you don't see character development / quirks that flesh out the cast and also have the pacing all over the place. So I could say I reluctantly watch light novel adaptions.

When the synopsis contain "actually the strongest" in it. There is bound to be lot of stupidity there. Though sometimes stupidly fun is work too.

Another one is revenge. I just don't get why the character are stupidly evil for the heck of it just so you can give protagonist a tragic backstory.

It's "reverse harem" for me. While I do like shoujo, some of my favorite series being of that genre, otome-ge adaptations and reverse harems (outside of Ouran High, since it wasn't really a reverse harem, only 2 characters actually liked the girl and the triangle wasn't a long-ass drawn out development, but it's usually tagged as such) just don't cut it for me. And I've actively tried them with the reasoning "I like shoujo, so i might like this" but nope, I just can't deal with it.

I’m personally not much a fan of horror. Hit me up with comedy if you can.
Come to think of it, I once did try writing a short story about an incompitent ghost and the human who took up the goal of training her to become the greatest spook in history.

@neoankara I was much that was with The Ryou’s Work... ‘The Strongest Shogi Player’? So does that mean he’s got mad skills, or that he just obliterates the board when he puts down a piece?

"Sister" is usually a big red flag for me, often in the title rather than the description.

I ended up trying and liking Neechu here, but I actively avoided it for a while before I tried it.

@hatguy12 I would be lying if I said I totally agree, but in cases like My Big Sister, it’s actually a breath of fresh air since the series at least isn’t incestous...
Maybe we should make a rival post on this topic about buzzords that peek a persons curiousity about a series?

Kiss Him Not Me is my one exception to that rule.

I've got some Otome games downloaded (PlayStation Plus freebies) that I just don't want to even try starting. T.T

I'm glad we're getting our first major retail Male x Female sim type game stateside in Song of Memories. I really would love to see us get more of these in the West. Getting the White Album games stateside would be a dream.

I'd be all for that if you want to post it. I already know mine offhand (Triangle, Desu-Game, Survival, Final Volume / Last Battle). =]

“I’m in love with my little / big sister “. Is squick inducing for me.... enough for a “nope”

                                  I read banned books

@terrence I love tragedy specially when the mc goes out with a bang and climatic end. But yeah any incest is usually a insta nope for me. For me it’s usually the covers that are insta nopes for me. I don’t like loli covers for the most.

I don't really judge a story based on any premise, genre, or style. I feel like I have a bit of a catchphrase now saying this so many time but I like to say that any premise/Genre/Trope can be done masterfully, horrendously, and differently; it is all in how it is executed. I feel like in an anime or any T.V. show you can judge it based on the first ep cuz any problems in the ep will likely remain and sure a series could get better but I do not want to experience a bad story so I can experience a good story. Even episodic series like Avatar or Sherlock Holmes, Avatar has a forward progressing story even if it is episodic and this since it is episodic you won't experience a bad story for more than an episode. Sherlock Holmes is purely episodic, with all of its sixty stories there may be some you don't like and some you do like but if the first story "A Study in Scarlet" is not up your alley then the rest of the series probably is not either. As for LNs, the first book should be able to hook you. I think Shield Hero, NGNL, and Danmachi are great examples of series that would have made you go "NOPE!" when reading the synopsis but there is just something about them that makes you want to read more or they are just great to begin with.

edit: The only thing I have trouble with is whether I should go into a series assuming it is 0/10, 5/10, or 10/10 and adjusting my rating as it were.

"Love Triangle". I get the hell away.
"Tragedy". I can take serious stuff, but I avoid tragedy. Just preference.

@dtta what made you hate tragedy? Like is there a specific show? I didn’t like the tragic end Gundam Iron Blooded orphans did which was super tragic. But That would be an example I hate/love.

Horror & tragedy are my "nope' tags.

For the latter, I read to escape from how shit my life is, I don't want to read stuff that's more depressing. For the former, I grew up on stuff like Friday the 13th movies & Stephen King books so I'm kinda burnt out/meh about it.
