      Other titles : 最凶の支援職【話術士】である俺は世界最強クランを従える/
I'm the Most Evil Support Class "Talker" and I'll Subdue the Strongest Clan in the World
      Publisher : Overlap
      Author: jaki
      Artist : fame

      Releases :
      Vol 1 - Jun 25, 2020
      Vol 2 - Oct 25, 2020

Synopsis : Young Noel had always aspired to be a strong warrior like his grandpa, but was instead blessed with the weak Talker support class skill. Despite that, he diligently pushed and trained his limits under grandpa's training so he could become the strongest (up until grandpa's death fending off a monster invasion).
Thus did he set on his ambition to become the supreme and strongest adventurer leader by all means necessary, even if it means being utterly cruel and merciless to all who would impede his rise...

The base story's about a driven, highly motivated male lead who desires to be top dog and leader of his own adventurer team despite his lack of natural strength, like many other stories out there.
What sets it apart from other Japanese works is his morally grey (bordering on villain) personality and outlook, which is more in line with the male leads of certain Chinese and Korean novels/webtoons. He's ruthless, cruel, scheming, low-empathy and vengeful towards traitors - there's a reason his life motto is "get even by any means necessary". He's not above using fear and intimidation to get what he wants and is very much like an intelligent but dangerous gangster.

I've heard Overlap's been hawking the title in Japan, plus there's a manga adaptation. Perhaps J Novel might find it interesting to add another Overlap title to the roster.

The series originally started as a webnovel, but the author ended it mid-2020 to exclusively work on the LN version.
The 2 main reasons are :

      • Author's dad had a cerebral stroke; author needing to care for their dad means less time to regularly update the webnovel.

      • Author got very angry after finding out the webnovel was being fantranslated into English. They were very protective of their IP and disliked the fantranslation since "they had no way to verify the translation's accuracy or interpretation as they intended it to be ".

I wonder if a licensed official translation of this series would assuage the author's fears while allowing a greater audience to appreciate his work.

It's really interesting to see the response from the author following them finding out about the web novel fan translations.

Well, it's his right to be angry, but let's face it, if you are working on a webnovel and it's good enough, EXPECT someone doing a translation, duh...

I mean, I'm following the manga for this which is being scanlated, and the chances of that ever being licensed is, frankly, pretty slim. Will he get angry if he finds out about that translation too?...

            @Korppi

I've heard some creators/publishers don't have that kind of understanding. To them piracy is bad, it eats away at my readership base and is an insult to the hard work I put in, end of story.

It reminds me of how certain fantranslations of Korean webnovels/toons keep getting sent cease and desists by their creators/publishers even though there's no official licence for thise titles.

Do you think this LN has a shot at getting licensed? Considering J Novel's established relationship with Overlap and all.

Well, the manga is good enough to read but it's not that far ahead, but the novel itself has pretty abysmal ratings/reviews on novelupdates...

Novelupdates reader reviews can be rather subjective, and may not always reflect what the Japanese fans think.
Things that may be popular with Novelupdates' crowd may not be so with the Japanese, and vice versa.

@zz2000 If you write a story you own it's copyright unless you give it away somehow (employment agreements can sometimes make a business own what you write). Sharing the story on a public site does not give permission for others to distribute that story unless those are the terms for using that public site. Sometimes you have to do some things to prove you were who wrote it. Copyright law is actually rather complex.

Fan translations, without permission or a license agreement from the copyright holder/owner are technically illegal to distribute. Fun side note, even though you don't have permission or a license to publicly share the story in another language the translator technically owns the copyright of the translation so neither the author nor the translator can distribute the translation without coming to an agreement with each other.

The internet is rife with copyright abuse.

All that being said, it is up to the copyright holder or their representative to enforce the copyright compliance. If they don't do anything nothing will happen.

Just a further note on this, the same group that was doing the webnovel translation restarted the whole thing by starting to translate the light novel from scratch...

Regardless of the drama and tantrums, I too would love to have this licensed.

That's very daring of the fantranslators; considering the author also threatened via WN account they'd make Overlap bring legal charges against anyone who dares fantranslate the light novels without permission.
