Now I'm going to have to go thru the published volumes and prepubs to verify Higashira's height against Yume's... and everyone else's... just because...

And we're off with episode 7, starting at 70.3% into volume 2 and right into a "youthful indiscretion". Boy, are they making up for lost time.

I'm guessing they called it quits at 91.1% or close to it. Seems like they changed the bit with Mizuto and Higashira in the library the next day slightly. They didn't go to the family restaurant again. Since that's where Yume dumps all over Mizuto for rejecting Higashira, I don't know if they're going to skip over that conversation or not. If they do skip it, and I'm thinking they will, that would put us at the end of volume 2.

Based on that estimate, we are still tracking to cover a little over 40% of volume 4. No new OP, so I'll stick to the estimate in made last week. If they do head to the family restaurant, it would greatly slow down progress and they'll be had pressed to get to 30% thru volume 4. That's nearly an entire prepub part.

We'll see next week, although I'm going to have volume 3 queued up when I start watching.

@pcj After nearly 10 edits, I still couldn't get the spoiler text to display. I just deleted it.

                And we're off!

The anime starts at about 7.2% of Volume 3. It then jumps to when Yume and Minami were giving Higashira her fashion makeover. We got treated to two "youthful indiscretions". The episode appears to end at 17.5% with Higashira going home.

We seem to have lost a little ground. My estimate is now only slightly more than ¼ of Volume 4, but we are heading into Kawanami/Minami-heavy sections of the story. We will have to wait and see how deeply the anime covers those parts.

                Until next week!

Welp, they covered the actual breakup in today's episode. And they told us way more about it than we got in the novel. And they either changed the breakup reason a bit or the anime is spoiling stuff the novel hasn't told us yet. And maybe my memory is faulty but I'm pretty sure Yume was the one to finally call it off in the novel, but the anime had Mizuto doing it. In the anime, Yume personally witnesses Mizuto with another girl in the library, while in the novel, she heard about it from someone else (and we were speculating that person heard it from someone else who saw HER with him in the library).

I've been confused in reading the LN as to why they broke up - expecting a big reveal...and it was typical teenage angst and failure to communicate

                    maybe that's on me

Glad that the anime made things clearer about the breakup, seeing the whole thing from start to end helped. It's also making me root even more for the two of them to get back together.

Shoot. This week's episode was a flashback. While the expanded details of their breakup were nice to see, (Thanks, author-sensei!), I can't say that the pointer for how much of the series has been covered moved at all this week. Even the post-marriage (of their parents) scene was looking backwards. (Spoiler tag in case you AREN'T reading the LN.)

                        spoiler

Still, it was from earlier in the LN, so I'm leaving the pointer at 17.5% of volume 3. That puts the end of the anime at 90% of volume 3. Again, since there's a lot of Kawanami and Minami focus in the LN going forward, I'm going to say "Wait until next week." But my gut is now telling me that we are only going to cover 3 volumes.

maybe it's me - but the anime seems to be going faster than the novels - this week was right before the trip to visit family/oban and Yume buys a swimsuit, movie 'date' at home...regardless, the relationships seem to be moving faster:

                          • Yume admitted to herself that she doesn't see herself with anyone but Mizuto
                          • Higashira let Yume know that she'd be ok being 'f%&k buddies' with Mizuto--even if they aren't dating (and was refreshingly not jealous about who's lap-pillow Mizuto ended up on)
                          • Mizuto remembers they place they first-kissed (?) and almost gets sentimental about it

Seems like they are skipping most of volume 3 in order to cover volume 4. We'll see next week.

To be fair, volume 4 has a very good stopping point, and the Minami/Kawanami storyline is kinda adjacent, so I could see them just skipping it.

Sorry about the double post, but...

This week's episode starts at the beginning of volume 3, so we are definitely going out of sequence. (Episode 8 was 7.2%-17.8% of volume 3.) We then jump from about 5.7% of volume 3 to about 55% of the way thru volume 4 prepub part 1. The break in the anime seemed to coincide worth the end of prepub part 2. The episode ended at the end of prepub part 3.

As some folks expected, they seem to have skipped over all the Kawanami-Minami stuff. With that in mind, the new estimate is to finish volume 4. My big question is will they end it with... (Spoiler for those that aren't caught up on the LN)

                                  spoiler

                                  Let see what happens.

Most of volume 3 was skipped, and went through volume 4 on the last two episodes. It worked better on the LN of course.

                                      spoiler

Regardless, at the end, I think I'm satisfied with the anime for what it was. The banter between the siblings is always enjoyable.

Chikuma being upset that he lost Yume at the end kind of came out of left field given that they never showed him observing the kiss (which was the big clue-in in the novel). The anime gave you no clue he was interested in her until Madoka went "oh, that's how it is, my condolences."

But I also enjoyed it. I feel like leaving out most of volume 3 was probably a good idea considering which story they wanted to tell and how much time they had. They can do that story in season 2 (even though it's out of order) without too much trouble, if it gets a season 2. Which might be why we didn't get the full introduction to the childhood friend exes until right at the end....

Overall, very happy the series got an anime! I really hope anime-only watchers had a good time. I know it's inevitably said whenever anything gets an adaptation, but...they should read the light novel if they enjoyed it.

Due to time constraints a lot was left out, understandably, which is a shame because there are some really great emotional scenes that you can only get from the light novel. The biggest example of this being the chapter dedicated to Mizuto's great grandfather's autobiography, which was practically skimmed over in the anime.

I hope there is a season two though because it is disappointing that we missed out on the chaotic roller coaster of Minami and Kawanami in volume 3.

p.s. Also very disappointed that they left out the part in volume 2 where Mizuto reads Kawanami's journal as a punishment for teasing him.
