@sinnoaria From what i have seen on the website, I don't see it listed as any perk in regards to the membership when looking at what you get. It just seems to be a bonus that is there. (unless I've missed where it is mentioned)

It technically is a bonus, but...

        • Become a J-Novel Club Member and read the latest volumes as they are translated!
        • Membership is $4.95 a month or $4.50 a month for an annual Membership.
        • Discuss the latest chapters on a special Members Only forum!
        • Weekly releases of ~40 pages a week per series, tons of series to be announced (link here)
        • Read on the web or on our apps (link to iOS store, Android store)!
        • Prepub releases available only until final ebook published, so become a member today!

Read the latest volumes (sort of a perk I guess, but if you are going to buy the premium ebook anyways...). Membership price, not really a perk. Discuss latest chapters, technically a perk, but not really something I'd normally pay money for (I mean, there is always other places to talk). Weekly releases, that is basically just part of 'Read the latest volumes'. Read on the web or on our apps is basically again part of 'read the latest volumes' and the app and web don't cover premium ebooks so not really much of a perk there. Prepub releases available only until final ebook published is not really a perk.

Basically, "Read the Latest Volumes" is really the only special perk. The extra forum is just a perk for people that like to discuss or proofread. Premium gets you an extra forum and a credit each month on top of membership plus a discount on credits?

So to me, the catch-up titles are really the biggest perk.

I think it benefits older users as well as newer users since it can give you a chance to brush up on anything that is forgotten. (Not everyone will remember the details of something they read months ago).

For people that are getting the premium ebooks anyways though, the real benefit of the membership is being able to help with fixing up typos and maybe interview bonuses.

Winning isn't really that fun if you want a challenge... Making others win, on the other hand...

@timmaaah you didn’t miss anything, it’s isnt a part of the membership, it was a bonus that was offered for new users to catch up on old volumes.

Being able to read the latest volume is pretty much the entirety of the membership, regardless of a user being premium or just a normal member.

The only “perk” premium members get is the premium forum section, and they receive a $1 discount on all premium credit purchases.

I'll be honest... I'd rather just buy premium for a month, buy like 200 credits, and then buy all the books (I have 40 credits left here, but waiting on a few titles). I have to say that the newer potion novel is kind of a plus right now since I actually find the quality to be higher than I'm used to (on par with the premium ebooks I've bought so far), but most of the other titles just frustrate me to the point where I kind of gave up on trying to throw out proofreading type comments a while ago.

Winning isn't really that fun if you want a challenge... Making others win, on the other hand...

I imagine that catch-up is designed as a perk but one that isn’t listed in the perks list because the list was written when the site was created and is way out of date. Rather like the faq list is out of date (it says “JNC won’t do physical but may in the future license books to other publishers but not yet”, however 7 Seas have licensed JNC books for over a year)

There's little point to the usual membership without catch-ups so I'd say it's one of the biggest perks, actually. Even if it's not excessively listed as a membership perk on the site.

Yeah, I got the membership more because of the catchups, otherwise I would have stuck with single months.

It was a major part of my decision to get a membership. I only joined in September 2018 so there are a lot of series where I'm too late to be able to read the prepub for volume 1 to see if I want to buy the series. I can't stand to start reading a series with some later volume.

I'd be just as happy with a "permanent catch-up" where premium members can read the full volume one of every series every month, instead of the rotating every volume catch-up. For ones I like enough to keep reading, I'll still buy volume 1 for the bonus stories.

                        2 words: Disney Vault.

Having content be only available for a certain amount of time has shown to work. Catch up is an incentive to become and stay a member.

I always felt that the value of my membership WAS the pre-pubs. Yea, sometimes they are rough, but the serial nature of the releases kept me interested and I feel I get a ton of content for my $5. (for example: many titles come out with a 'part' per week and 8-10 'parts' per volume. So if I only 'follow' 2 series, I get the equivalent of a volume a month for $5.00, that's the 'break even point'. I follow many more than 2 and use my premium credits only for titles that seem to have lots of bonus content)

I thought of "catch up" as exactly that, an opportunity to read a title that maybe I hadn't started, or took a break from so that the next month I could have that title as one I followed again in the pre-pubs, I would've caught up with the pre-pub releases. It seems logical to me that catch-ups might be titles where sales are lagging in the back catalog and as a way to spur interest in soon to be released new volumes, it's marketing not a perk.

                          I read banned books

Good point - having only 2-4 a month means we have a reason to try those specific series now, instead of putting it off forever.

As November continues on I've considered reading Demon King Daimaou even though the anime seemed a bit generic and had an ending that did not make me eager to find out what happens next.

Without the vault aspect I'd probably keep ignoring the series forever.

@drone205 Having volume one of a series isn’t equivalent to the Disney Vault. It’s more like offering the first episode of a tv show for free in the hopes of people buying the season.

@the-green-death I think you might have misunderstood them. They meant that the current model of rotating the catch-up titles through the catalog is equivalent to the Disney Vault, and were arguing that they might want to keep it as it has been shown to work for Disney.

@jaquobus Ah that’s fair. I think you could do the rotation and also have the first volumes of series over a year old on permanent unlock for members and have that work without cutting profits, but honestly I could be way off on that.

Terms and conditions vary, there are series with vol.1 unlocked forever for members. Top of the head I can only remember Isekai Mahou.

                                          February Catchup-Catchup
I know I have neglected to update the catchup series for Dec and Jan, so to make up for it Feb/March are going to be catch up catch up.

Read Seven Series with your membership, from volume 1! Ao Oni, Bluesteel Blasphemer, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord, Outbreak Company, The Master of Ragnarok

And you'll have 2 whole months this time, since this is like…. over 45 volumes to read! That's…. Well, if you can read 45 books in two months good for you.

OK, I am now a happy camper!

I already own all of Daughter (and recommend it) but I haven't read any of the others.
